Are you Persian?

To whom it may concern--

Here's my first Instagram post for SGSAM and I thought it could use a bit of explaining...

So, on October 28th I decided to head in to work early and go to the bookstore. Not something uncommon at all. I then spent too much time in the bookstore to wait for a train (also common) and decided it would be quicker to walk the 15 blocks to work. So I began my trek from 12th and Broadway. I knew I had to pass through Union Square and I usually love the vibe. There's so much to do and see and so many people to watch... but not today. I put in my headphones and began walking at a VERY brisk pace. It was when I got halfway through the square, it happened. A guy stops me by waving and looking very concerned. I can't help but take out my headphones and look at him. He asks me very upset, "Where's the nearest Starbucks?!" I reply, "Dude. We're in Union Square. There's one on every corner." to which he says, "Right. You're beautiful you know? I love your vibe. Are you Persian? You're gonna give me your number and I'll show you a REAL Persian time." I quickly respond with, "Fuck off, dude" throw a peace sign and continue my way. He follows me for about 3 blocks and then gets tired and I lose him. #thatsnotokay #fuckthepatriarchy #shitguysscreamatme

STOP THE BULLSHIT

-- Sydney the Destroyer

An introduction to a new era...

To whom it may concern--

Today is a new day. I am not saying that everything is going to be alright. I am not saying that I woke up this morning feeling positive about the new presidency and that I am in any way in a good place. BUT, because of the nasty events in the past few days, I have been pushed to raise awareness and to speak out for those who cannot or don't but want to.

I have found that the number of times per week that I am catcalled has skyrocketed in correspondence with the rise of the Trump. That's just not acceptable. So, I started this project in which I document everything that is screamed at me or said to me that makes me feel uncomfortable with a place and a date. Please feel free to send me your horror stories and to share this blog, the instagram, or just post something with the hashtag #shitguysscreamatme. Above all else, love each other. Be kind to one another. Call everyone out on their bullshit.
